What is so unique about the exhibition?
THE DISCOVERY OF KING TUT will give you a fascinating and lively insight into the most important archaeological discovery in the Valley of the Kings through the medium of carefully crafted reconstructions. You are given an introduction to ancient Egyptian culture and the time of Tutankhamun via clear, large-format graphics and short films. You then get to see an introductory film about Howard Carter’s exciting hunt for the tomb.
In the footsteps of the explorer
Next, you enter a room in which visitors discover the treasures of the Pharaoh in three burial chambers, exactly as the explorer did before them. This is an experience shared only by the discoverer and a small number of people in Luxor in the winter months of 1922/23. In this way, the exhibition brings together objects that can only be seen separately today, even in Egypt: While the King’s treasures are preserved in the Cairo Museum, his tomb with its wall paintings, the King’s mummy, the outer coffin and the stone sarcophagus are to be found in the Valley of the Kings.
The King’s golden treasures
In the second part of the exhibition, there is the opportunity to examine the most beautiful and important items of burial treasure more closely, such as the figures of gods, the golden canopic shrine for the internal organs or the golden throne of the young Pharaoh. The centrepieces of the exhibition are the huge, gilt shrines from the King’s burial chamber, the coffins and the famous gold mask.
Tutankhamun – exciting culture for children
Dr Wilfried Seipel, Director General of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna from 1990 to 2009, has identified an increasingly essential role played by THE DISCOVERY OF KING TUT: the communication of important, fundamental cultural content, especially in schools.

Inside the exhibition
So that we are able to offer all visitors, groups and school classes an enjoyable visit,
we ask that the following guidelines be observed:
- Please arrive punctually within the time window that you have booked (30 minutes) or at the starting time of the booked school-group tour.
- Your class will be greeted by a member of staff who will explain the most important rules for the visit.
- Please designate one child as the photographer or take on this role yourself. We ask this out of consideration for our other visitors so that the children are not all taking photographs at the same time. Please do not use a flash or tripod.
- Once the devices for the audio tour have been distributed or you have assembled with the Group Guides for your school-group tour, you can begin your exhibition visit.
- Please allow 2 hours for your visit.
- Our team will be happy to answer your questions.
We can provide teachers with comprehensive teaching material, including work sheets on Egyptian subjects such as the Nile, pharaohs, mummies, and pyramids. You can find downloadable material on the right-hand side.
The material is aimed at school children aged 10 to 12. The children should be split into five groups per class and the work sheets should be distributed to these groups before the museum visit so that the children can prepare for their group work. The project work requires internet access so that the children can conduct their own research.
For more information on group rates, please contact Tracy Harris at email@example.com or call 646-979-4123.
